One old, Four new
I love this time of year. In my bird shed things are very busy. This is my first nest of young Canaries. I have other nests that will have young in a few days, this pair got a really early start.

Remember my damaged old racing Pigeon, I still have him, he is still going strong. At 16 years old now. Here he is, checking out what the Canaries are eating.

Birdies!

Those canaries are precious! And I secretly adore pigeons... I know the ones downtown irritate people but I love them. I'll probably be one of those old ladies feeding them in the park.

Then again, I think dandelions are rather lovely... I guess I am just a menace to civilization.

I just love birds, no matter what they are. If one is injured, I always take it in.
There is nothing wrong with dandelions! around here they are giving a lovey show right now, along with the many fields of rape.

Yes! They are the singing canaries. Some days you need ear plugs when in the shed, they sing so loud I have about 50 of them.
I cannot believe, I still have my Pigeon. The oldest pigeon recorded was 22 years old, so we have a way to go yet.

Hope he makes it! *g*

Yikes! That's a LOT of canaries! =>}

I had one orange canary (I named him St. Clement - "Oranges and lemons", say the bells of St. Clement's") when I was a teenager. He was a little scruffy looking, but that guy could SING! =>}

Here is a photo of a few more of my birds. Boy they sure can sing! On a summers day, when they are all out in the outside flight singing there is nothing better.

That must be just wonderful! *g*

We feed the wild birds in our garden and this time of year there are all sorts passing through with beautiful songs. As soon as the temperature is above 0º we sleep with our window open, partly so I can hear them singing in the morning. =>}

In the winter, we glass in the outside flight so they can use it all year round. Once it warms up we take if off. Our room is at the back, we also sleep with the window open. So yes, we are woken most mornings through the summer and fall with the canaries sing their little head off.

How wonderful! =>}

It must be a LOT warmer there than here! *g*

Most years the temp in the winter, hardly ever for us goes below -6 and that is just odd night. Mostly we are at -2or3 if it goes below freezing at night.
betagoddess From: betagoddess Date: May 6th, 2008 06:30 pm (UTC) (Link)

That IS a warm winter! -20º here is normal and it often goes to -30º/-40º with the wind chill factor and sometimes without it! Any birds like canaries would have to be completely insulated and heated for the duration. =>}

I remember when I first moved to the states, I lived in Chicago the winters were allot colder than in the UK. Boy you really have it cold.

Yup. Quebec can be cold, but I love snow and winter, so I don't mind. I really, really hate rainy, gray winters. =>}

Give me four DISTINCT seasons ANY day. *g*

The canaries are cute! I am just pleased they have a good Mom & Dad so I don't have to feed they myself.
Pigeon is doing great.

They are very sweet, and will be out of the nest I would say by next weekend. It is amazing the speed they grow. I was going to take a photo of them a couple of days after hatching but they were to small to see. They are now two weeks old.
