Oh, my, it looks like it was really lovely, though I'm sure life was hard. I can hear the chanting from the Abbey.

As you look at the drawing you see like a gate house on the left. Come down and round to the right, you can see another gate. That is the one we used. The cloisters to the right have all gone it is now a great park. The first photo I posted on the picspam lj was taken from the main road. You can see the park. I'm guessing that was where all the cloisters were years ago.

Have you ever been to Iona?

Yes - I stayed there for a fortnight a few years ago, and it was just the most magical experience. At the end of our stay, two of us wanted one last look at the Abbey, so we walked over at around eleven that night, and being Iona, it was open and unlocked and the candles were still burning. Quite amazing to sit in the Abbey in the dark and have it all to ourselves - you could almost taste the history and the peace. ::happy sigh::
