Another Nature Picture
Just walking out to check on my horse as the weather is turning pretty wet. I have 3 stables & to get onto the stable yard have to walk through a covered walk way between two of the stables. As I was walking through I saw this small bird fly from an area where I have some coat hook's on the wall, to hang head collars & ropes, don't use these thing very much any more as she just has the run of the place, only need a head collar when the Blacksmith comes about every 8 weeks. So you can see why I was surprised when I looked at the area the bird flew from & found this!

isn't it wonderful! It's a Jenny Wren's nest, built in and around the two old head collars I keep hanging there. When you look close, inside the lining is all moss. I know they do sleep most night's in someplace warm once the weather turns colder. Now I will have to fish out another head collar from in the tack room next time the smithy comes, don't want to disturb this at all.

Janet, that is so cool. I'm glad Dora will have some company for the winter!

Isn't it great! Dora always seems to have plenty of company. Nothing big! mice, blackbirds that sleep in the stable with her, She has a Robin that helps her eat any leftovers. I put what I call mice ladders in her water buckets each winter. I hate coming out in the morning & finding floaters, that just makes me feel bad. Vern thinks I'm nuts!

Now, I have to look up Jenny Wrens - I have only read about them in stories from my childhood and I assumed the "Jenny" part was like calling all cows "Bossy"!

Really they are just Wren's most people say Jenny Wren. Wonderful little bird, with a very large voice.

How very cute! I'm glad you're not going to disturb the nest. =>}

No! I would never do that. You can buy warm nest's for Wrens, they are like little woven baskets, I have a few of them around as well, in some of the out buildings. Thats why I was so surprised when I saw this one.

Different climate I guess. I'm not sure WHAT wrens do here in the winter. Possibly they go South, if they know what's good for them. =>}

Isn't that perfect? I've wondered where wrens hide in the cold - they seem so tiny to be out in the cold and the wet. There's one I don't have to worry about :~D

They will go into old nest boxes in the winter. My Dad had a Blue Tit box in his garden, and I remember one morning about 12 Wren's come out once the sun came up.They will snuggle up in groups to keep warm when it's cold.

I had no idea! I'll make sure out nest box is secure as soon as I can - I love the idea of snuggling wrens :~)
